Guaranteed Ways to Make your Holidays Easier in the Diverse Classroom

The holiday season can be hectic in the classroom. There is SO MUCH to do and the time is very limited!  If your classroom is like mine, it is very diverse.   The majority of my students celebrate Christmas.  However, about half of my class celebrates other holidays.  Some celebrate Hanukkah while others celebrate Kwanzaa, Eid, Diwali, or the Chinese New Year.

I searched on Teachers Pay Teachers for the different holidays that I needed.  However, most of the resources that I found were related to Christmas Around the World and did not refer to the other holidays that I needed to make all of my students feel included.  Therefore, I decided to create this resource myself.  I named it “Holidays Around the World.”  It soon became one of my best sellers!  Although most of my students can read and write, I have a few students who are not able to yet (i.e., exceptional students, ESOL/ESL).  Therefore, I made my “Holidays Around the World” differentiated.

It includes a letter that I send home each year to ask parents what holidays they celebrate at home in order to include them in our curriculum.  This resource also includes directions and suggestions, as well as the following:

Choice 1 ~ Holidays Around the World Informational Booklet {five holidays in a single book}.  It is available on size (8.5”x11”), half page, and differentiated (Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced.  This resource also includes fun ELA and math printables.

Choice 2 ~ Holidays Around the World Informational Booklets {one book per holiday}.  This option is also available on size 8.5”x11” and half-page for the holidays that follow: Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Eid, and Diwali.

I have recently translated it into Spanish.

You may obtain it in either English or Spanish, or as a bundle including both languages.

I also created a resource for everyone in our class to learn about the Chinese New Year.  It is available only in English at this time, but I will soon translated into Spanish.

So…if your classroom is like mine, these resource will make your life easier in order to include all of your students.

Informational Text for K-1

Kindergarteners and first grade students need to be exposed to quality informational text.  Nonfiction writing exposes  students to real life reading and helps them develop their background knowledge.

When selecting informational texts, teachers need to take into account their student interests.  In my years of teaching, I have found that the majority of students are attracted to animals.  Therefore, when selecting nonfiction texts and/or creating materials for my students, I focus mainly on different types of animals.  Once students are interested in a specific nonfiction text and I have their attention, I can definitely teach the skills I have planned.

With this goal in mind, I created a series of nonfiction texts, which is called RESEARCH IT!  Each resource in this series features a different animal.   One of my objectives when creating this series was to have my students participate in shared research and writing projects (See CCSS.K.W.3.7).   Each resource in the series includes a non-editable PowerPoint presentation with photographs in color and information about the featured animal and a PDF file that includes the items below:

  • Informational booklet in black and white, which my students use for conducting their research project {or for independent reading or guided reading}.
  • Poster in B/W, which includes additional interesting facts about the featured animal
  • Life cycle anchor charts {colored and B/W which include cut-n-paste activity with answer key}
  • Worksheets for note-taking {2 choices}
  • Graphic organizers as pre-writing/research activities {4 choices}
  • Research template {2 choices: flip book with topper and Animal Research Book}

The series is available in both English and Spanish (separate or as a bundle).  Please click on the covers for additional information.

The last resource, Starfish, is in progress at this time, but will  be available at my TpT stores, Star Kids and Star Kids by Naomi soon.

Ideas to Accompany the Text “Duck for President”

“Duck for President” by Doreen Cronin is one of my favorite books to read in my classroom.  In this text, Duck is not happy with the chores that Farmer Brown assigns to him, so he decides to hold an election to get a different job.  He does this a few times because he does not like the jobs he is elected to.  He also finds that being president is very hard.  I do not want to spoil the end, so read it for yourself.  It is a funny, wonderful book to read at any time of the year that.  You may find in your classroom library, Media Center, bookstore, or Public Library.

After reading the text and asking comprehension questions orally, I pass the worksheet below to sequence the events of the story.  Students color the events illustrated on the bottom of the worksheet.  Then, they have to cut them out and place them in the order that the events happened in the story.  Last, they paste the pictures in the correct order.

I have posted photos of this activity below:

Guaranteed Ways to Make your St. Patrick’s Day Easy and Fun

St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow Sunday, March 17th.  We celebrated it this past week because we have Spring Break this coming week.  Yay!  We read various literature books on leprechauns and completed St. Patrick’s Day activities that integrate math, science, language arts, and art.  One of them was to create leprechaun traps to catch these mischievous creatures.   However, on our last day before the break, after we had made the traps, leprechauns visited our classroom when we stepped out and made a BIG mess!  Our hypothesis is that they entered though the roof.  You have to see for yourself.

What a mess they made in our classroom!

They even left a message and Skittles in our leprechaun traps!

It was a memorable day for the students…and the teacher!
