The State of Florida has new educational standards! In order to improve its education system, the Common Core Standards were eliminated. In its place, Florida created the Florida’s Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.) Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for Grades K-12. These standards are the framework that educators will use to build knowledge-rich curricula.
In ELA, the standards are divided into four strands: Foundations, Reading, Communication, and Vocabulary. In Math, the standards are divided into four major strands: Number Sense and Operations, Algebraic Reasoning, Geometric Reasoning and Data Analysis and Probability.
In order to facilitate the teacher’s job, I have created the following resources for Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade using the Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards. These resources are illustrated in order to promote student understanding and engagement, so they are student-friendly. All the ELA and Math Standards are included. There is a poster for each standard. Each standard is color coded. On each level of the scales, the students will see pictures next to the words. The pictures are geared towards students who are not able to read and understand. Therefore, these students have picture scales.
Level 1 of each scale contains the phrase “With my teacher’s help, I can be partially successful at 2.0 or 3.0 content.” According to Dr. Marzano, any student who is not able to master the content at level 2 or level 3 is considered to be at level 1. In other words, students at level 1 receive differentiated assistance from the teacher.
Level 2 contains the foundational knowledge and skills neded to build to level 3.
Level 3 content and skills are standard specific. They mirror the standard using student-friendly words when possible.
Level 4 includes content and skills that have students moving up a cognitive level from the goal when possible (level 3 on the scale).
Full page posters are 11″x8.5″ and the mini posters are 5.5″x4″. The standards and DOK (Depth of Knowledge) levels are printed on the upper right side of the posters. There is an editable file included in addition to the PDF file.

I am currently working on the Second Grade Math Goals and Scales. Soon they will also be posted on Teachers Pay Teachers.
